On this World Maritime Day, we join the global maritime community in celebrating the theme chosen by the International Maritime Organization for 2023 ‘MARPOL at 50 – Our commitment goes on’. The theme reflects the maritime industry’s long-standing commitment in protecting the environment from the impact of shipping. MARPOL (International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships) has served as a robust regulatory framework in safeguarding and preserving the marine environment from the prevention of pollution by ships from operational or accidental causes.
IMO’s marine protection treaty, the MARPOL Convention, is the main international convention covering prevention of pollution of the marine environment by ships and currently includes six technical Annexes:
-
Annex I – Oil
Prevention of Pollution by Oil
-
Annex II – Noxious Liquid Substances
Control of Pollution by Noxious Liquid Substances in Bulk
-
Annex III – Harmful Substances
Prevention of Pollution by Harmful Substances Carried by Sea in Packaged Form
-
Annex IV – Sewage
Prevention of Pollution by Sewage from Ships
-
Annex V – Garbage
Prevention of Pollution by Garbage from Ships
-
